Research Groups & Areas

The Center is formed by more than 180 researchers of 17 research groups with activities in two main areas:

1) The first area, Advanced Communication Systems and Networks, aims to develop resilient and intelligent telecomunication systems that support Europe’s digital sovereignty. Key topics include:

  • Future communications and wireless technologies, focusing on beyond-5G/6G systems and high-frequency propagation.
  • Network architectures and applications, covering distributed systems, real-time protocols, and self-organizing networks.
  • Cybersecurity and resilient systems, with emphasis on zero-trust architecture, post-quantum security, and AI-based intrusion detection.
  • Remote sensing and space communications, including satellite telemetry and robust electronic components.
  • Digital infrastructures for autonomy, targeting secure, high-assurance systems for civil and defense use in line with European defense priorities.

2) The Data Science and Intelligent Systems research area focuses on developing adaptive, efficient, and intelligent systems capable of learning, reasoning, and interacting across diverse domains. It complements communication infrastructure research by enabling advanced data processing and decision-making. Key topics include:

  • Data engineering and digital transformation, focusing on real-time analytics, simulation-based inference, and handling uncertainty in dynamic systems.
  • Artificial intelligence and adaptive autonomy, including learning algorithms, federated and explainable AI, and cognitive robotics.
  • Neuromorphic and intelligent electronics, exploring brain-inspired models and energy-efficient embedded computation.
  • Multimedia signal processing and semantic analysis, targeting scene understanding and intelligent interpretation of complex sensory data.
  • Human-centered interaction and interfaces, designing cognitive models and adaptive systems for enhanced usability and co-operation.
