A Century of Quantum Physics: IPTC Researchers at the Forefront of a New Era

18/08/2025

In the International Year of Quantum Science, during which the UN is celebrating 100 years of quantum science and technology, the BIT magazine of the Official College of Telecommunication Engineers (COIT) describes its state of the art and future impact.

In a featured report in BIT magazine, coordinated by Prof. Félix Pérez Martínez, researcher from the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC), it explored cutting-edge developments in quantum sensing, secure communication, computing, and their growing convergence with artificial intelligence.

Their work aligns with Spain’s newly launched Quantum Technologies Strategy 2025–2030, which commits €800 million to building a national quantum ecosystem. Quantum sensors, for instance, could replace conventional systems in fields like medicine, navigation, and defense, Quantum key distribution (QKD) could render communications virtually unhackable and quantum computing will be able to solve problems that cannot be resolved with current information processing capabilities.

The study also addresses the urgency of post-quantum cryptography to safeguard current systems against future quantum attacks, and underscores quantum technology’s strategic role in defense and geopolitics.

Marking this historical anniversary reminds us that quantum technology is not merely a scientific curiosity — it’s a natural continuation of humanity’s quest to connect, compute, and comprehend with ever greater power and precision. The next revolution is already underway.
