UPM Inspires Women and Girls in Science

05/02/2026

To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is hosting a full week of outreach activities across its campuses to promote gender equality in STEM[1] and inspire scientific vocations among girls and young people.

Organized by UPM’s Unidad de Cultura Científica y de la Innovación (UCC+i), del Vicerrectorado de Innovación, Emprendimiento y Transferencia, the program highlights the role of women in science and technology, challenges gender stereotypes, and brings real female role models closer to students and the general public. All activities are led by UPM women researchers from a wide range of schools and research institutes, reflecting the university’s multidisciplinary strength.

The agenda includes public talks, hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and interactive sessions on topics such as artificial intelligence and bias, cybersecurity and the gender gap, biotechnology, renewable energies, programming, materials engineering, water science, forest engineering, space exploration, and gender-sensitive urban planning. Participants will be able to build supercapacitors, recreate Martian soils, experiment with sustainable materials, visit clean rooms, discover how solar cells work, and explore how science tackles climate change and environmental challenges.

Special creative workshops for younger children combine science, experimentation and play, while visits to research centers allow students to experience the daily work of women scientists in fields such as microelectronics, agronomy, architecture, telecommunications and industrial engineering.

With this initiative, UPM reaffirms its commitment to inclusive science, scientific outreach and equal opportunities, underlining the importance of visible female role models to build a more diverse, fair and innovative future in research and technology.
