The Royal Academy of Engineering appoints ETSIT-UPM professors Elena Hernando and Carlos López Barrio as associate members
The Royal Academy of Engineering has appointed two professors from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (ETSIT) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) as associate members. They are Professor Elena Hernando and Professor Emeritus Carlos López Barrio, who received the distinction for their collaboration with the institution in two working groups: one dedicated to engineering for health and dependency, and the other focused on engineering education, respectively. They received their official diplomas on October 14, in a ceremony where a total of 25 professionals from various fields were honored with the same title.
Professor Hernando is a researcher at the Bioengineering and Telemedicine Group (GBT) and a founding member of the Center for Biomedical Technology (CTB) at UPM, where she leads the Information and Communication Technologies Laboratory for Personalized Medicine. Her work focuses primarily on patient care technologies, providing technological solutions for both healthcare professionals and patients. Her research areas include information systems for home monitoring, integration of medical devices in telemedicine systems, artificial pancreas development, automatic data processing using artificial intelligence approaches, and decision-support systems.
Professor López Barrio, who led the Integrated Systems Laboratory, has conducted research in signal processing architectures, energy efficiency, and programmable integrated circuits (FPGAs). His interests also include technological innovation management. In addition to serving as professor and director of the Department of Electronic Engineering, he was a member of the board of the R&D Center for Information Processing and Telecommunications (IPTC). He has also developed part of his professional career at the Telefónica Group, where he held positions as Director of Innovation at Telefónica R&D and Director of the Production Area at Telefónica Spain.
