Science and Innovation Week UPM 2025: Exploring the Future of Technology

10/10/2025

The Science and Innovation Week is one of Spain’s most important outreach events, dedicated to bringing science and technology closer to society. Organized annually across universities, research centers, and institutions in the Community of Madrid, it offers citizens a chance to discover how research and innovation improve our daily lives.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) once again joins this initiative in 2025, opening its doors to students and the general public through a wide range of talks, demonstrations, workshops, and guided visits. The goal is to inspire curiosity, foster scientific culture, and highlight the key role of engineering and technology in shaping a sustainable future.

This year’s edition covers diverse areas such as artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, sustainable mobility, telecommunications, and virtual reality, offering a hands-on experience of science in action.

Among UPM’s schools, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (ETSIT) stands out with several engaging activities led by researchers from the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC):

👁️ The Retina and Artificial Intelligence: An Alliance Against Blindness

November 6, 2025 – 17:00
Learn how AI is helping researchers analyze retinal images and fight visual impairment.

Discover how artificial intelligence is transforming the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal diseases in this interactive talk/workshop. We will discuss conditions such as macular degeneration and how technology is learning to “see” what the human eye might overlook.

The talk will feature retina specialists from the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital and experts from the Technical University of Madrid who develop AI-based technologies applied to visual health. They will share their experience in monitoring socially significant conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema.

This activity is designed for: University students, General Public, and people over 65. 📝More information and registrations: juanjo.gomez@upm.es

🎮 Super Mario Bros Invented Gravity
November 6, 2025 – 18:00

We are especially excited to highlight this activity organized by Rodrigo García, a recent member of the IPTC.

Have you ever wondered why Mario always falls after jumping — or how video games make the laws of physics so much fun? In this interactive talk, we’ll explore how science and technology shape the virtual worlds we love. Using the iconic Super Mario Bros as our starting point, we’ll uncover how gravity, motion, and other physical principles are simulated in video games, and what happens when the rules of reality are bent for gameplay.

Come and see how science can be both serious and fun, and why even Mario owes a lot to physics!

This activity is designed for secondary school students, high school students, and the general public, offering a playful and accessible way to discover how scientific concepts are used in computer graphics, programming, and game design.

🧠 Designing Inclusive Therapies in Virtual Reality
November 12, 2025 – 10:00
Discover how immersive technologies are transforming healthcare and promoting accessibility for all.

Workshop on extended reality and communication technologies for the development of behavioral and cognitive therapies in immersive environments. In this workshop, we will address the challenge of improving quality of life and independence while developing a fully inclusive Metaverse — the Incluverse.

Research related to the Incluverse 5G project (UNICO R&D 6G 2022, TSI-064200-2022-009), website: http://www.incluverso-5g.es/

This activity is designed for: Lower secondary students (grades 7–8), upper secondary students (grades 9–10), high school students, vocational training students, university students, general public, individual visitors, organized groups, and people over 65.
