RAXUS: Advancing Risk-Based Drone Operations in U-Space

The European project RAXUS (Risk-based Authorisation and eXecution in U-space airSpaces) has kicked off in Madrid, bringing together 19 European partners to develop innovative solutions for safer, more efficient and scalable drone operations in U-space.
Funded by the SESAR Joint Undertaking and coordinated by ENAIRE, with CRIDA A.I.E. leading the project coordination, RAXUS will develop digital solutions to streamline the authorisation and execution of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operations. The project will automate flight authorisations and integrate risk assessments based on operational and area-specific risk requirements, including SORA-based approaches.
RAXUS will develop two complementary solutions. SOL1 will provide digitalised UAS flight authorisation, ensuring compliance with risk-related requirements. SOL2 will introduce multi-stage authorisation together with an Advanced Fairness Service, supporting the efficient and fair use of increasingly congested airspace.
The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) actively participates in RAXUS through the Data Processing and Simulation Group (GPDS) of the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC). IPTC-UPM is mainly contributing to SOL2 by leading the design and validation of different fairness management frameworks to ensure equity in airspace access. This contribution builds on GPDS’s experience in drone traffic management and U-space operations. Juan Alberto Besada Portas, UPM’s Principal Investigator for RAXUS and Vice-Chairperson of the SESAR 3 Scientific Committee, together with David Carramiñana Jiménez, from GPDS, participated in the project kick-off meeting in Madrid.
RAXUS aims to support authorities, U-space Service Providers (USSPs) and operators in enabling efficient, scalable and safe U-space operations, contributing to the future integration of drones and Innovative Air Mobility into European airspace.
