Manuel Sierra– IPTC researcher and Director of the ETSIT – highlights GPS innovation and urban mobility challenges in Madrid’s M-30 tunnels at RTVE

In an interview with RTVE, Prof. Manuel Sierra—IPTC researcher and Director of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (ETSIT) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) —discussed the role of cutting-edge research in advancing urban mobility. Using Madrid’s M-30 as a case in point, he emphasized how this 32-kilometer ring road, including 10 kilometers of tunnels, has become Europe’s largest underground urban road network and a worldwide reference for modernization and sustainable infrastructure.

Sierra noted that the increasing complexity of such mobility systems demands reliable connectivity and advanced monitoring tools. At ETSIT-UPM, IPTC researchers are developing high-precision GPS/GNSS solutions, integrating positioning with inertial navigation systems, and applying real-time satellite observations for infrastructure control. These innovations are not only key to maintaining safety and efficiency in the M-30 but also demonstrate how academic research can directly contribute to resilient, globally relevant transport infrastructure.
Prof. Sierra took part in a European Space Agency project as Principal Investigator of the UPM team, within a consortium led by Airbus Space, entitled ‘Multifunctional Antennas for Future Navigation Payloads.’ The project focused on the development of second-generation antennas for the Galileo satellites. Prof. Sierra is the Director of LEHA-UPM (Antenna Testing and Certification Laboratory), where the Galileo satellites’ DUDE antennas have been characterized. Galileo constitutes the European counterpart to the GPS system.”
