José Ramón Casar Corredera, Full Professor at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación(ETSIT) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), was elected on December 10 as President of the Real Academia de Doctores de España. His appointment received broad support from the members of this public corporation devoted to scientific, technical, humanistic, and social advancement. Until now, he had served as Vice President, a position he assumed in February 2024, and previously chaired the Academy’s Engineering Section.

Affiliated with the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications (SSR), Professor Casar leads the Data Processing and Simulation Group (GPDS). His research interests include radar technologies, signal and data processing, multisensor fusion, and image analysis for both civilian and defense applications. He has served as principal investigator in more than thirty publicly funded research projects and around seventy industry-driven R&D initiatives. Over his career, he has received several individual and collective awards, including the Grand Cross of Naval Merit with white insignia. The Royal Academy of Doctors is composed of up to 120 full members across ten disciplinary sections, with the mission of promoting sciences, letters, arts, and culture. During Casar’s presidency of the Engineering Section, five UPM professors joined the institution: Francisco González de Posada, Félix Pérez Martínez, Gonzalo León Serrano, Carlos Buxadé Carbó, and Eloy Álvarez Pelegry.

Professor Casar was also the co-founder and Director of the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC), a UPM R&D hub that now includes more than 226 researchers.

It is the second time in the history of the Academy that the position has been held by an engineer and professor from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

The IPTC community warmly congratulates him on this outstanding achievement, celebrating the continued excellence and leadership he represents.
