From Madrid to Europe: UPM Researchers Turn Open Data into Excellence

Researchers from the Internet of Next Generation Research Group (GING), part of the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), have been awarded at the Madrid City Council Open Data Reuse Awards for their outstanding contribution to improving public open data quality. The research group, GING (Next Generation Internet Group), is led by Álvaro Alonso González, IP of the project.
The awarded project, YODA (Your Open Data): Improving harvesting in data.europa.eu, won in the category focused on enhancing the quality of the municipal open data portal. The initiative tackles a critical challenge faced by many public data platforms: low-quality metadata that limits visibility and reuse at the European level.
YODA introduces an open-source architecture that significantly upgrades metadata quality—from “sufficient” to “excellent”—without disrupting existing systems. Its solution ensures real-time updates and full compliance with regional, national, and European regulations, while remaining fully compatible with current infrastructures.
Thanks to this innovation, datasets published by the City of Madrid become more accessible and discoverable through the European Data Portal, expanding their impact for citizens, researchers, and developers across Europe.
The award was presented during the ceremony held at the Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Center, recognizing the project’s technical excellence and its contribution to transparency, interoperability, and digital innovation in public administrations.
This recognition reinforces GING and IPTC’s role as leaders in next-generation internet technologies and open data research, demonstrating how academic innovation can deliver tangible benefits to society.
