Empowering the Next Generation of Women Engineers

Madrid, June 23, 2026. On the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicaciones (ETSIT) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) has announced its incorporation as a new venue for the STEM Talent Girl program, an initiative designed to encourage scientific and technological vocations among young women.
Celebrated every year on June 23, International Women in Engineering Day was established in the United Kingdom by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). It has become a key date for highlighting the role of women in a sector that has traditionally been male dominated. Beyond recognizing the achievements of pioneering women engineers, the event aims to inspire future generations to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
ETSIT-UPM’s inclusion in the STEM Talent Girl network will make the program more accessible to students across the Madrid region. Promoted by the ASTI Foundation and already present at 14 locations throughout Spain, the initiative provides guidance, mentoring, and educational opportunities for young women interested in STEM fields.
As a preview of this collaboration, ETSIT-UPM hosted the closing event of the program’s tenth edition on June 6, where finalists from regional competitions presented the projects they had developed throughout the academic year.
The commitment to gender equality is also reflected at the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC), where 32 female telecommunications engineers currently work alongside 199 male colleagues. While women remain underrepresented, they now account for 14% of the workforce—two percentage points above the national average for the engineering sector. Since the latest staffing update in December 2025, female representation has continued to grow steadily, reflecting a positive trend toward greater diversity and equal opportunities in engineering.
Through initiatives such as STEM Talent Girl and the ongoing efforts of academic and professional institutions, the technology and engineering sectors continue to move toward a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative future.
