AI in Education: Personalized Learning with Humans at the Center

Artificial Intelligence is transforming education by enabling more personalized, adaptive, and efficient learning experiences while reinforcing—rather than replacing—the role of teachers. During the latest #GeneraciónIA forum, experts explored how AI is reshaping teaching, learning, assessment, and the skills students will need in an increasingly digital world.

Among the speakers, Enrique Barra Arias, researcher at the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC) and professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), emphasized that students must learn not only how to use AI effectively but also how to understand its limitations, ethical implications, potential biases, and the legal framework governing its use. He highlighted the importance of responsible AI education and argued that empathy, critical thinking, creativity, and human interaction will remain essential components of learning that technology cannot replace.

According to Barra, generative AI has the potential to make truly personalized education a reality by adapting content, pace, and learning strategies to the individual needs of each student. Such capabilities can complement teachers’ work, especially in large classrooms, by providing tailored support and continuous feedback while allowing educators to focus on mentoring and developing higher-order skills.

The research carried out at IPTC has broad potential applications in AI-powered adaptive learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems, personalized assessment and feedback, teacher-support technologies, and responsible AI training. These developments could help educational institutions improve learning outcomes, increase student engagement, and prepare both learners and educators for the responsible integration of AI into education.
