Spain’s Industry and Academia Debate Their Role in the Global AI Revolution

05/03/2026

Spain is at a decisive moment in shaping its future in artificial intelligence. Under the title “The Role of Spanish Industry and Academia in the AI Revolution”, a new event will bring together leading voices from industry, academia and entrepreneurship to discuss Spain’s strategic positioning in the global AI ecosystem.

Organized by the IEEE Spain Artificial Intelligence Group, the session will take place on March 17 at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (ETSIT) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Madrid and will also be streamed online.

The event will open with short talks addressing the opportunities, strengths, weaknesses and threats facing Spanish industry and academia in AI. A roundtable discussion will follow, featuring experts including Rubén San Segundo Hernández, Director of the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC).

Researchers from the IPTC will actively participate in the discussion, contributing their expertise on key issues such as global competitiveness, translating research into industrial impact, regulatory challenges, talent consolidation and the level of investment needed for Spain to stand alongside major technology hubs.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session and a networking opportunity, fostering collaboration and dialogue to help define Spain’s role in the AI revolution.

Currently, the IEEE Spain Artificial Intelligence Group is coordinated by an IPTC researcher, Javier Conde Díaz. If you are interested in joining the group, you can email him at javier.conde.diaz@upm.es.
