Remote Driving: Connecting Vehicles, Networks and People

01/10/2026

Researchers from the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) are participating in the development of Remote Driver, a technology that makes it possible to control a vehicle remotely over hundreds of kilometers.

The project recently achieved an important milestone: a vehicle located at the Centro Tecnológico de Automoción de Galicia (CTAG) in Porriño, Pontevedra, was remotely driven by an operator located in Valencia. The demonstration shows how mobile communications and real-time video transmission can enable safe remote vehicle operation.

One of the main challenges is maintaining reliable communications throughout the journey. To address this, the researchers have developed a navigation system that considers not only distance and travel time, but also network quality. If necessary, the system can select a longer route to avoid areas with poor coverage. During integration tests, it detected network degradation, adapted video transmission and automatically recalculated the route.

The Remote Driver architecture combines low latency 5G/6G communications, real-time video processing, vehicle management, navigation and interaction with the remote driver. The research also addresses video robustness to packet losses and real-time monitoring of end-to-end latency.

This technology could have applications in logistics, public transport, car sharing and fleet management, while also complementing autonomous driving by enabling human intervention when required.
