On 11 November 2024, the SESAR AI Flagship Workshop was held at Spazio Europa in Rome, Italy, gathering industry leaders, researchers, and stakeholders to advance the conversation on Artificial Intelligence in Air Traffic Management (ATM). Supported by Engage 2 (https://engagektn.eu/) and the SESAR Joint Undertaking (https://www.sesarju.eu/), this workshop was a key moment for collaboration, innovation, and exploring regulatory approaches to AI implementation in aviation.

Building on discussions initiated at the AI Initial Coordination Workshop earlier this year, the event focused on:

  • Fostering interaction among SESAR projects working with AI.
  • Encouraging meaningful dialogue with EASA to align AI innovations with the EASA AI Roadmap 2.0.
  • Shaping the future of AI in ATM through collaborative contributions from experts across the sector.

CODA’s Contribution:
The CODA Project was prominently featured during the workshop, presenting its vision of human-compatible AI systemsChristophe Hurter, a key member of the CODA team from ENAC, delivered an impactful presentation, showcasing how CODA (https://iptc.upm.es/coda) integrates AI to enhance collaboration between humans and machines in air traffic control. See the VIDEO on our YouTube channel.

CODA’s approach aligns closely with EASA’s (https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/document-library/general-publications/easa-artificial-intelligence-roadmap-20) roadmap, incorporating:

  • Level 1 Automation: Providing assistance to human operators.
  • Level 2 Automation: Facilitating seamless human-AI teaming while ensuring that the user retains control over decision-making processes.

Engaging Discussions and Future Collaboration:
The workshop also facilitated dynamic discussions on the future of AI in aviation, addressing challenges and opportunities for innovation in this fast-evolving field. For CODA, the event provided a platform to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and explore synergies with other SESAR projects, further driving its mission of enhancing aviation safety and performance.

Gratitude and Next Steps:
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the workshop organizers, speakers, and participants for creating a vibrant environment for collaboration and innovation. Events like these are crucial in shaping the trajectory of AI in air traffic management, and CODA is proud to contribute to this shared vision.

As the journey continues, CODA remains committed to advancing human-centered AI systems that ensure safe skies and a more efficient future for aviation.
