What is CODA?
CODA is a SESAR 3 Exploratory Research project, started in September 2023 and ending in August 2026. CODA involves developing a system in which hybrid human-machine teams collaboratively perform air traffic control tasks.
Specifically, the project will develop a prototype of a system that could adapt to specific situations and react accordingly by using advanced adaptable and adaptive automation principles dynamically guiding the allocation of tasks between the air traffic controller and the Digital Assistants. The system will i) assess the operator’s cognitive status, ii) use current traffic data to foresee the future tasks that the operator will need to perform in the future, and iii) calculate the impact of those tasks in terms of cognitive complexity. With this information, the system will predict the future mental state of the operator and will act accordingly following an adaptive automation strategy.
